Child & Youth Participation

UNICEF Canada has released a new Handbook on Child Participation in Parliament, a joint effort of parliamentarians in the inter-Parliamentary Union and UNICEF.  It offers a range of ideas to appropriately seek and represent children's perspectives in public policy.  It's an excellent document but perhaps a little too long.

Teenagers Having Sex Are Now a Minority

About 43 percent of unmarried teenage girls and 42 percent of unmarried teenage boys have had sexual intercourse at least once, according to new research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US.  In 2002, the last year such a report was published, 51.1 percent of girls and 60.4 percent of boys had had sex by 19.

US: Number of Gay Couples Who Adopt Nearly Tripled Over the Last 10 Years

The number of gays adopting children in the United States nearly tripled in the last decade, in part due to lessened restrictions and increased social acceptability, according to a report by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.  About 21 740 same-sex couples adopted children in 2009, which was an enormous jump from 6,4777 in 2000, the report said.

Britain's Children: Breaking with UN Convention

It has been three years since the UK was admonished for failing to comply with its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.  The UN Committee responsible for the convention recommended that the UK government take 'urgent measures' to address a 'general climate of intolerance and negative public attitudes towards children, especially adolescents'.  Yet it is fair to say that, since then,  the UK has failed to act on the Committee's concerns.  Read More here.

About Half of Grade 12 Students Admit to Drinking in Excess, Driving Intoxicated

Authors of the Cross Canada Report on student alcohol and drug use, released Monday, are sounding the alarm about the prevalence of alcohol and cannabis use among students in Grades 10-12.

No Place For Kids

The evidence presented in this (highly recommended Annie E. Casey Foundation) report makes clear that, except in cases where juvenile offenders have committed serious crimes and pose a clear and present danger to society, removing troubled and delinquent young people from their homes and families is expensive and often unnecessary-with results no better (and often far worse) on average than community-based supervision and treatment.

This summer the community of Pikangikum had it's sixth suicide within a span of two months.  Burying the young has become far too come in Pikangikum, a remote community of 2 400, where more than 60 teenagers have committed suicide in the past decade.  Read article.

"Little Princes"

If you read one book this summer then we suggest you rush out (to Costco) and pick up a copy of "Little Princes" by Connor Grennan.  It's a funny, touching and remarkable tale of corruption, child trafficking and civil war in Nepal.  It is also one young man's extraordinary quest to reunite lost Nepalese children with their parents.  It's a wonderful, inspirational read.  Learn more here or here.

Youth Suicide

"Before it's too late" is a report on early intervention programs aimed at preventing youth suicide in Australia.  The report, released in July of 2011, comes from a federal parliamentary committee looking into the need for early intervention programs to prevent youth suicide.  Recommended.

Take a Stand

Three school-busloads of Ontario children and youth will kill themselves this year.  That's two or three young people per week.  They are among the more than 25 000 children and youth identified every year in Ontario to be in need of mental health services and supports.  Of these, only about 15 000 will get the help they need.  The Ontario Action Network for Child & Youth Mental Health is a provincial coalition of youth, parents, service providers, unions and other partners committed to ending the crisis in child and youth mental health.

Ontario Coroner Examines Spate of First Nations Youth Suicides

Between 2006 and 2008 on one First Nations in Ontario, 16 young people between the ages of 10 and 19 killed themselves.  The number becomes even more striking when put in the context of the fly-in population of 2,400.  Full Article Here.

Games People Play (New York Times)

The US Supreme Court's decision to strike California's ban on selling and renting violent video games to young people raises the obvious question: what are children and teens playing on their computers and digital screens?  The answer isn't pretty.  Among the most popular "casual" games (so called because they are quick and simple to play) are twisted, violent games with names like Beat Me Up, Bloody Day and Boneless Girl.

Mental Health Services For Everyone

The Ontario government's plan to improve mental health services for children and youth is a good strategic investment, as currently four out of five kids do not get the help they need and 70% of adults with mental health problems begin to have difficulties before they reach adulthood.

B.C. Still Worst in Country on Child Poverty

According to child and youth advocacy coalition First Call British Columbia has registered the highest rate of child poverty in the country for the eighth year in a row.  The number of poor children in the province rose from 87 000 in 2008 to 100 000 in 2009.

The Kids Are Not Alright

The employment rate for youth aged 15-24 last month was 55.6%, well down from 60.3% back before the recession in September, 2008 due to an increase in unemployment and an increase in those not looking for work.  And the proportion of youth in part-time jobs has risen.

Mental Health Top Issue Facing Schools

In a 2009 study of 1 100 principals in 25 countries, 90% expressed mounting alarm about mental health problems, with Canadian principals more likely than others to say one in five students need help.

Sleep Problems Linked to Bullying

Children who are bullies or are aggressive or have conduct problems at school, are more likely to be sleeping during the day according to a new University of Michigan Medical School study.  The study suggests that bullying might be reduced by improving sleep quality.  It is recommended that school-aged children sleep 10-11 hours per night.

Make Spanking Kids Illegal ( New York Daily News)

Throne Speech and Budget

The Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children (CCRC) has prepared an analysis of the Throne Speech and Budget that focuses on longer-term issues for children and youth.  The CCRC welcomes any suggestions as well as support as they continue to pursue these themes over the coming year.

Outlook is Bleak for Foster Kids 'aging out' of the System (Toronto Star June 11)

While roughly half of their peers between the ages of 18 and 24 are still living with their parents, youth "aging out" foster care don't have that option.  Canadian and International research shows that between 40% and 60% of these youth end up homeless. Read more.

Mental Health of Youth Improving - BC Study


The McCreary study in British Columbia states that today's youth report lower rates of considering and attempting suicide compared to their peers at any time since 1992.  However, 56% of youth who reported a mental or emotional health condition said they had not accessed the mental health services they felt they needed in the past year.
