Scholar Lisa Wexler calls suicide "an unruly phenomenon."  An individual decision impacted by many factors, it's more difficult to predict and prevent than other public issues.  Wexler, professor at the School of Public Health and Health Science at the University of Massachusetts, has worked with communities in Alaska since 2000, focusing on suicide and suicide prevention.  "My research is not about, but with the people...it's intended to start a conversation and bring awareness."  Read More.  

The Pedophile Next Door

In searching for causes of pedophilia, researchers have largely dismissed the popular belief that abuse in childhood plays an important role.  Studies show that few victims grow up to be abusers, and only about a third of offenders say they were molested.  Scientists in Toronto centre have uncovered a series of associations that suggest pedophilia has biological roots.  Among the most compelling findings is that 30 percent of pedophiles are left-handed or ambidextrous, triple the general rate.  For More:

Ontario's Advocate for Children and Youth Launches First Public Inquest Database

Recommendations and commitments from more than 26 inquests in the last fifteen years into the deaths of children and youth connected to the children's services system including, child welfare, youth justice and children's mental health, are now publicly available on the first provincial inquest database in Canada.  See Database.

Panel: "Next Steps for Children's Rights"

A panel presentation and discussion relating to children's rights will take place on Thursday January 24th from 1 to 4 pm in the Sally Horsfall Eaton building (SHE) room 560, Ryerson University, 99 Gerrard Street East.  The session aims to: identify what happened at the Geneva review in September, its significance and what can be done for follow up to support child rights in Canada.  Panellists include: Irwin Elman, Ontario Provincial Advocate, Professor Francis Hare, Professor Lisa Wolff, UNICEF Canada and youth delegate, John-Paul Chalykoff.  In order to facility national involvement, this event will also be streamed live on the internet.  A video of the proceedings will be available after January 24th.

Canadian Children Need Improved Access to Quality Dental Care

The number of Canadian children with dental decay is on the rise:  57 percent of children between 6 and 11 years old have had a cavity, and the removal of teeth affected by cavities is the most common surgical procedure among preschoolers in Canadian paediatric hospitals.  As the amount of public funding for dental care decreases, many families have to pay out of pocket.  Without dental insurance, these costs may be prohibitive.

Adult Antidepressants Suspects in Suicides of Canadian Kids

Powerful antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs approved only for use in adults are suspected of harming - in some case killing - Canadian children.  Though Health Canada and the drug makers acknowledge the drugs are not approved for use in anyone under 18, doctors - often general practitioners with little psychiatric training - are prescribing these medications with little oversight.

Amnesty International Calls on Canada to Stop Violations

Anmesty International has called on Canada to stop the violation of human rights in the country, particularly with respect to the rights of indigenous peoples.  In a report released yesterday, the humanitarian organization highlighted that three United Nations reviews conducted in 2012 all found a wide range of human rights abuse, especially for indigenous peoples.  For more:
