Ontario's Advocate for Children and Youth Launches First Public Inquest Database
Recommendations and commitments from more than 26 inquests in the last fifteen years into the deaths of children and youth connected to the children's services system including, child welfare, youth justice and children's mental health, are now publicly available on the first provincial inquest database in Canada. Panel: "Next Steps for Children's Rights"
A panel presentation and discussion relating to children's rights will take place on Thursday January 24th from 1 to 4 pm in the Sally Horsfall Eaton building (SHE) room 560, Ryerson University, 99 Gerrard Street East. The session aims to: identify what happened at the Geneva review in September, its significance and what can be done for follow up to support child rights in Canada. Panellists include: Irwin Elman, Ontario Provincial Advocate, Professor Francis Hare, Professor Lisa Wolff, UNICEF Canada and youth delegate, John-Paul Chalykoff. In order to facility national involvement, this event will also be streamed live on the internet. A video of the proceedings will be available after January 24th.

Canadian Children Need Improved Access to Quality Dental Care
The number of Canadian children with dental decay is on the rise: 57 percent of children between 6 and 11 years old have had a cavity, and the removal of teeth affected by cavities is the most common surgical procedure among preschoolers in Canadian paediatric hospitals. As the amount of public funding for dental care decreases, many families have to pay out of pocket. Without dental insurance, these costs may be prohibitive.
